General Overview of the FCE

Reading: 1 hour 15 minutes
The Reading component consists of 4 tasks. The tasks can be multiple choice, gap filling or multiple matching. The four texts in this component are each ca 350-700 words in length. The types of texts used include: advertisements, correspondence, fiction, informational material (e.g. brochures, guides, manuals, etc.), messages, newspaper and magazine articles, reports.

Writing: 1 hour 30 minutes
The Writing component consists of 2 parts. In part one there is one compulsory task, in part two the candidate has to choose one task out of four. Each part should be no longer than 120-180 words in length. The task in part one is a transactional letter. The task in part two can be: an article, a non-transactional letter, a report, a discursive composition, a narrative/descriptive composition. One of the four options in part two consists of a choice of two tasks based on the set reading texts (which are not compulsory).

Use of English: 1 hour 15 minutes
The Use of English component consists of 5 parts. The tasks types include: multiple choice gap filling, open gap filling key" word transformations, error correction, word formation.

Listening: 40 minutes (approximately)
The Listening component contains four parts. Each text is heard twice. The types of text used include: phone messages, commentaries, instructions, lectures, news, announcements, speeches, stories, etc. Recordings will contain a variety of accents.

Speaking: 14 minutes (approximately)
The standard format of the Speaking component is two candidates and two examiners. This component consists of 4 parts. In part one the candidates talk to the examiner and each other about themselves, their home, family, school or work, plans for the future, etc. In part two each candidate talks about a set of photographs. In part three the candidates do a task together and in part four the candidates discuss a topic with the examiner.
